Chapter XIII

Jai

Waiting for Zayn to answer my knock was a surreal experience. I felt like a teenage boy asking to see his daughter—too weird for me.

Even though I had a copy of the keycard to his suite, I had thought it would have been inappropriate to use it since we were still working on our relationship. So instead, I had rapped on the door like a common door-to-door salesman.

The door opened, revealing Zayn’s mammoth frame hogging the entire doorway. “Hey. What’s up?”

“I came to talk to Claire. Is she in?” Of course, she was. Where else would she have been? She had been a prisoner since the day she was born.

“Yeah, sure. Come in.”

I followed him into the suite with my hands tucked into my jean pockets. “Want a scotch?” he asked.

“Nah, I should probably stay sober for this.” Lately, my temper had been looking for any excuse to rear its ugly head.

“Good idea,” he agreed. “Coffee?”

“Sounds good.”

“Want a latte?” he asked innocently.

“What the fuck, man? That’s basically coffee-flavored milk. I’ll take an espresso.” What was the point of coffee if you needed to drown it in milk? I wanted to taste that smooth bitterness as the coffee made its way down, burning my insides.

I took a seat on one of the barstools tucked under the kitchen island as Zayn set to work on the high-tech, instant-espresso maker on the counter. He placed a foil pod into the top of the machine and pressed the start button. Espresso shot into a clear glass, the creamy foam settling at the top like a chocolate-colored cloud.

When it was done, I took the glass from Zayn and threw it back like it were a shot of tequila, feeling the heat scald the back of my throat in a pleasurable way.

He took the seat next to me. “You two seemed civil yesterday,” he said, before sipping the nearly white latte he had made for himself.

“Yeah,” I replied, fiddling with my empty cup. I hadn’t been sure that we could keep the peace for the duration of the party, but it had turned out better than I could have imagined. I had even gotten the chance to apologize. To be honest, I hadn’t said it hoping she’d accept it. I had owed her that apology, and she’d needed to hear the words.

Zayn cradled his cup in his hands between is knees on the barstool. “She seems nervous today. Must have sensed you were coming.”

“Yeah, I asked her if it would be okay to stop by, and she said ‘yes’.”

“She was jumpy this morning for breakfast. Knocked her plate over. Eggs went flying everywhere.” He grinned, shooting me a sidelong glance.

“No way!” I chuckled at the visual. She had always been cute when she was nervous. It made me happy knowing I still had that effect on her.

“Yeah, and then she crawled on her hands and knees to clean it up, blaming it on being distracted by some choreography she was planning for Meena.”

“She really
