CHAPTER 16
MAMAâS BOYS
Iâd taken acting lessons from various drama coaches and acting teachers since arriving in LA. The classes took a lot of time and money, both in short supply, but it was something I felt I needed to do if I wanted to fulfill my goal of working in showbiz. I eventually landed at Lieux Dresslerâs Patio Playhouse in the San Fernando Valley. Not only was it more affordable than the big Hollywood acting schools, but it was a small group of students, which was more comfortable and made me feel like I was getting more time and attention. I immediately took to Lieux, a plucky little redhead and former General Hospital actress who taught the class. There were several guys in the class, but only two other girls: Lynda, a former Miss World USA; and Debbie, a younger girl who wore braces and glasses, and sported an uncontrollable, frizzy brown âfro. She was always accompanied to class by her mom, who comprised an awkward, one-woman cheering section. Debbie had a characteristic throaty voice that made her stand out from the crowd. She was a natural and always blew everyone away when she did scenes. Lynda and I were the same age and got along well, despite a little friendly competition in class. We also bonded over the fact that sheâd had the same nasty experience with the very same tubby agent who had come to my apartment and tried to put the make on me. Lieux became our hero when she declared war on him and helped us get his name taken off the SAG-AFTRA list of approved agents. A couple years after I left the class, I was surprised and happy to see Lynda Carter on TV, starring in her own series, Wonder Woman. She obviously had some pull because she cast little Debbie Winger as her sister. Debra, of course, would go on to star in films like Urban Cowboy, An Officer and a Gentleman, and Terms of Endearment.
I was starting to get more and more frustrated with the direction my career was going, or more specifically, where it wasnât going. Every time I got an agent, got a new headshot and résumé, and began going on auditions, a job that paid âreal moneyâ would come up and Iâd find myself back on the road. Did I want to be an actor? A singer? A dancer? I had no focus. All I knew was that I wanted a career in show business.
