It’s almost four in the afternoon. So far, seventy-eight survivors have been rescued from within the hotel. Some were hiding out in their rooms and are being rescued by a hydraulic crane. But none of them have been Cam.

As I watch the crane descend with people on board, safe and sound, I can’t help but think that could have been us. If we’d stayed on the roof, we would have been safe.

We did it all wrong…

I close my eyes and turn away, trying to stay strong but losing my battle.

“He’s going to come out, Sage. Just focus on that, OK.”

“We did it wrong,” I say out loud. “We should have waited for rescuers.”

At that moment, yelling erupts and rescuers come running from the building. “Clear the area!”

We’re forced back. Men with loud speakers begin to shout and tell everyone to evacuate the street.

Florence grabs my arm as her eyes go wide. “No Sage, I think you did it right. I think the building is going to come down.” There’s urgency to her voice. In response, I step backward, ready to turn and run with everyone else. But then I see it, four men running from the side of the building—the side of the building I evacuated from, the side I’ve been watching for signs of Cam—between them, they carry something. It isn’t a black body bag, it’s a stretcher.

It’s a stretcher.

“They’ve found him.” I take off on a run toward him, my heart soaring in my chest. If he’s on the stretcher then there’s hope that he’s going to be OK. Florence yells from behind me, telling me I’m going the wrong way. But I don’t care. I’m sure it’s him. I’m sure.

I slam into a brick wall of a burly police officer. “Miss, we’re clearing the area. You can’t go that way.”

“That man on the stretcher, I have to see him.” I point wildly, catching glimpses of him from between the men. I can see his clothing, covered in concrete dust and black soot. And I can see his shoes. I know those shoes…

“You’ll have to see him at the hospital. I can’t let you through.”

Florence rushes up behind me, out of breath as she places her hand on my shoulder. “Did you see him?” I ask her, smiling because I can’t believe it. He’s safe.

He’s safe.

“Yes, I saw him. But we have to get out of here, Sage.”

The policeman is urging us to move along.

“I can’t leave him.”

“You aren’t leaving him. I’ll take you straight to the hospital. Come on.”

“Ladies, this building is unstable and could come down at any moment. And frankly, I don’t want to get caught in it. So you can leave the nice way, or I’ll arrest you both and drag you out of here in cuffs.”

“We’re going,” I assure him, grabbing a hold of Florence. “To the hospital?”

“Absolutely. Let’s go.”

The emergency room is crazy, and I have to fight for position to just talk to somebody. Nurses are doing their best to keep
