In het Nederlands is de uitgang van het woord vervangen door de Nederlandse verkleiningsuitgang -je of -ie, en deze is overgenomen in het Amerikaans-Engels als -ie, zoals gebruikelijk was; vergelijk bijvoorbeeld cookie. Aan die uitgang is te zien dat het Amerikaans-Engels het woord niet rechtstreeks uit het Munsee Delaware heeft geleend maar via het Nederlands.

En zo leeft dit indianenwoord via het Nederlands nog voort in het Amerikaans-Engels. Het komt vooral voor in het binnenland van de staat New York (zie illustratie 2.27). Varianten zijn ponki, pungie, punk(ey), punkie fly, punkie gnat, punkie fly. Een enkele maal wordt het ook gebruikt als synoniem van gnat.

In het Europese Nederlands is punkje, punkie als naam voor een steekmug onbekend gebleven, wat logisch is, want die speciale steekmuggensoort komt niet voor in de Lage Landen.

ca. 2008 To get rid of punkies gnats (yet another species of gnats) you need only move away from the lakeshore. Punkie gnats are generally found near moist, swampy areas and found near the muck that builds up on lakeshores.
