CHESS

I stayed at home

and set out the board, sat by Dad’s side

Christmas songs on the radio,

Mum out at work.

We played long games

through wet December days.

Rain drumming on the roof,

living room air, thick and safe.

Dad took his time, and I watched

and learned through losing.

Sacrificing pawns, and rooks,

bishops and knights –

I couldn’t see that

I couldn’t always go backwards

to correct my mistakes,

couldn’t see that sometimes there was a better way

to protect myself.

I’d be no good in battle, Dad said,

and I gave up and read to him,

instead, our favourite story from when I was a kid –

about a knight, and a monster,

on a mission

to save a princess. He smiled,

fell asleep just after he said –

“It’s just a story, Joe,

remember that, mate. ”
