Empathy

For days after awakening, Trinon screamed in agony. The attendants could barely contain him. Jakar and Modas had to step in more than a few times. Ganna ran around in desperation to ease the pain. He woke up from a deep cryosleep not fully healed, breaking through the chamber with frightening strength.

Some of his wounds reopened, turning the bed beneath bright red. By the fifth day, his rage had subsided, relenting to tears. He sobbed uncontrollably.

“You’re a demon.” Ganna wiped sweat from his forehead as Modas released him. “But you’re still a child in my book.” She lifted the injection gun from the nearby tray and administered the sedative. Trinon went limp. “That’s better.”

Modas stroked Trinon’s wet mane, moving strands from his face. Sadness, worry, fear; rage. It all balled up inside, ready to burst. On the first night, Jaron couldn’t take her child’s screams and refused to return to the medical bay. He didn’t blame her. It took every fiber of his being to stay and keep his son down with Jakar’s help. Und had stood in at the entrance horrified. The grief on his face plain to see.

Trinon turned his head and stared up at him with glazed eyes. The tears started drying. Modas took the wet cloth from Ganna and began wiping away the streak marks.

“It’s alright, my son. You’re safe.”

Trinon mouthed something. Modas leaned closer.

“What did you say?”

“Und.” Trinon whispered as he raised a hand and clumsily grabbed hold of his father’s robe. “Did I make it?”

Modas leaned up, eyes wide. Worry etched Trinon’s face.

“Yes. You did. He’s safe and very worried about you too.”

“Doubt…” Trinon’s barely audible voice trailed off.

“Your name was the first thing he said.”

“Huh.” More tears fell. “Glad.” Trinon fell into a deep sleep courtesy of the powerful sedative.

“He should be down for a few days with that.” Ganna wagged the injection gun in the air before setting it back on the tray. “Now I can finish healing his wounds.” She stood from the rolling seat. “I swear, your brood are a menace when we try to treat them.”

“It’s instinctive.” Modas cupped the side of Trinon’s face, then walked away from the chamber. “How long will it take for him to fully recover?”

“Longer than you think and he would like.” She went over to her workstation. “I would say about a year’s time.”

“That’s better than I thought.” He continued to the door. “Jaron will be happy to hear it.”

Modas headed for the family commons where the rest of his horde was out and about enjoying the afternoon. The young manbeasts were out practicing on the monolith while the little ones were being tended to by their parents. He saw Jaron spot him and stand from the bench along the wall.

“Is it over?” The bags under her eyes had gotten bigger since yesterday. “How is he?”

The other siblings looked over at him.

“Calm now. Ganna gave him a heavy sedative.”

“Different than all the others she gave him?” Her tone was dubious.

She had every right to be.
