CHAPTER 15
HUNTER
She was gone by the time I got to the table.
"Do you know where your sister went?" I asked Theo.
He shrugged. "She just ran, like ... that way, I think?"
A pavilion was on the other side of the field, a small brick wall enclosing the restrooms, the pitched roof covering picnic tables for families to sit and eat. And when I glimpsed past the trees surrounding it, I saw a flash of a black shirt, dark hair, and the ripped jeans from earlier.
"Stay here," I told him, eyes locked on the rapidly retreating frame of Iris.
"I will." He sighed, plopping onto a chair next to the table.
I took off, and chasing after her felt an awful lot like someone had just strapped us together and tossed us out of a plane.
This was the freefall, right after the moment of decision, and I let all of that frenetic energy propel me into a run.
"Iris," I called out again. "Wait."
The pavilion was empty, and she'd sank against the brick wall around the corner, her hand pressed to her chest.
"I don'tâ¦" she said, shaking her head frantically, "I don't know what I was doing."
Approaching slowly seemed like the smartest thing to do. It was what my logical brain would instruct me to do. But it was the other side of me coming out on top, the one who'd wanted this infuriatingly closed-off woman for so long.
"I think you do," I told her.
Iris pinched her eyes shut. "What did I do?" she whispered.
"Tell me what you felt," I begged.
Her eyes flashed open, hot and angry.
"Tell me, Iris," I repeated.
She straightened off the wall, stalking toward me, and pointed a finger at my chest, stopping just shy of touching me. "You know exactly what I felt, Hunter Buchanan."
I snatched her hand before she could pull it away and smoothed it over my chest. She swallowed a sob.
"Feel my heart right now."
Iris stared at her hand like it was separate from her body, but she didn't say anything.
I laid my hand over the same spot on her, fingers spread on the warmth of her skin, and her eyes fluttered closed. Underneath my palm, her heart thrashed.
"Tell me what made your heart do this," I whispered fiercely, sliding closer, the front of my thighs brushing her jeans. "I want to hear the words."
Iris sagged, her forehead settling onto my collarbone, and finally, she emitted a rough breath. "I couldn't stand the thought of her having you. I didn't even know I was going to speak until the words came out, but I couldn't not."
"Why?" My other hand slid around the curve of her waist and up the line of her back until her hair was tangled around my fingers.
Irisâs hand moved from my heart, curving around the edge of my bicep, and the light touch of her fingers had me breathing unevenly. Unconsciously, my hips pressed toward her, and she exhaled raggedly when she felt me hard against her stomach.
From a single embrace.
Because it wasn't just the touch of a woman that could do this to me.
