Chapter Ten

There weren’t many times in Samantha’s life she could remember feeling instantaneously changed. In the past, teachers, parents, and co-workers had asked if she felt any different after a milestone birthday or post-graduation. And not wanting to disappoint them, she’d occasionally lied and said yes. I feel older. I feel freer. Maybe those changes had kicked in later and she’d just never stopped to acknowledge them, but tonight, having married a man she’d known such a short time, the difference in her emotional makeup was a tangible thing.

Mostly because she was terrified she’d made a mistake.

Not because she didn’t like Duke. No, her fear stemmed from liking him too much. Giving him too much power to break her when their duty to one another ended. And it would end. Obligations always expired, no matter if they took one day or three years. Or if they occurred legally or mentally, with one party checking out, losing interest. Yeah. Tonight, she’d set herself up for a fall.

So why had she done it?

To help Renner’s company by becoming a stable figure in the boardroom? Yes, that had helped her decision to marry Duke along. A lot. When she’d broken her engagement, she’d broken an agreement to help the man who’d done so much for her. Marrying a good man with a decorated military background—Duke—would repair the trust she’d broken. But there was more.

A little seed had been sewn last night when Duke kissed her in the building vestibule. The ownership in his eyes, the way he’d touched her…there must have been a small, long-denied piece of Samantha that craved the chance to belong to someone, as sure as they belonged to her. But something told her no one could have tugged that reaction out of her…but Duke. When she’d been adopted by Renner’s father as a pre-teen, there’d been a sense of completion and security. One that had eventually been torn straight down the middle. She’d never wanted to risk such a catastrophe again. Had something shifted? Something that might convince her to take a chance?

The recklessness of such an idea simmered in her blood as they walked into her hotel room, Duke shutting the door with a definitive click.

It was too late to be cautious, as evidenced by the certificate in her purse. But when Duke began to close in on Samantha, her mind chanted one eager phrase. Bring on the fallout.

And there was that look again from Duke. Probably the way Adam had looked at Eve, or more accurately, the way a caveman had looked at his first source of food. Mine. He didn’t even have to say the word; she could feel him thinking it. It starved her. Even knowing she would pile her insecurities back on in the morning, tonight she wanted to be preyed upon. Wanted to sink into that possessiveness Duke projected and revel in it. Because she’d never experienced it before. Never once.

Duke reached behind his head, grasping his T-shirt at the neck and yanking it off in one fell swoop.
