Several women in the study agreed to S/M in a manner I referred to earlier as “acquiescence” — in other words, consent that was not freely given, though it was consent. For example, Marti, a white lesbian, now thirty-one, saw her S/M experiences at age twenty-two with her partner as sexual abuse:

She was into this, what do you call it, the domination, S & M–type stuff, and when I would try to think that that’s what she wanted, I would actually try to get into that. … I would try to please her and it didn’t work, the more I tried to please her, the angrier she got. … It was some of the time. I knew that she was into it and I thought, well, maybe if I try to get into it, which I didn’t, I didn’t even want to deal with it, for the benefit of the relationship, and as mentally as she had me abused I thought, well, what the hell. I tried it, and it was not pleasant.
