And I was only getting started. I was going to propose a theory to Tschinkel.

Digging, I was going to say, is a primal act—one of the most basic things humans do. When we dig a hole in the earth and climb down underground, we are engaging in truly eternal behavior, going all the way to the roots of the evolutionary tree, past our earliest mammalian ancestors, past the first vertebrates, down to the origins of multicellular life. As part of the burrowing lineage, I was going to say, we cannot help but feel an old and powerful connection to the earth. Deeper than our fear of enclosure, deeper than our fear of darkness or of being buried alive is a feeling of security we get from digging underground, of feeling the earth embrace us. Perhaps this convergence of ant and human burrows, I was going to say, is a reminder that we are only animals interacting with the earth like any other animal, all of us searching for the same solutions to the same eternal problems.
