Chapter 6—Hunter
We hurried to get dressed because I got another call from Rex, my building engineer. There were some structural issues I needed to deal with. Taking her with me was a must, but I was nervous that something would happen. She asked me what was wrong and I told her there were some issues at the resort, but she could tell I wasn’t being honest. That was when I noticed that I could hide my true thoughts from her. She could still feel my mood, but I was able to block thoughts of losing her that invaded my mine. That was good, especially if I wanted to surprise her for her birthday or something.
“How did you learn to block me out of your head, Hunter?” she asked angrily.
“What makes you think I did that?” I replied suspiciously.
Her eyes narrowed at me and she barked, “Because I can feel your worry, yet I can’t make out what you’re thinking. That’s not nice.”
“Babe, I don’t know how, but if I don’t want you in my head I just think of it.”
Asshole, she thought.
“Now, that’s not nice,” I grumbled.
“Damn it, it didn’t work, did it?” she hissed, crossing her arms in anger.
“Sorry, babe. It might be because I’m an Alpha or that I’m a shifter to begin with. I don’t know enough about it. Maybe I can take you to go see Creed up in Redding. It’s where I was when I sent Chloe and Gage for you.”
“So that’s why you didn’t come for me yourself?”
“Yes and no. If I came for you, we wouldn’t be able to leave your place. I’d have been fucking you on any damn surface. Second, we don’t have human mates, so there was so much that I didn’t know. I needed answers just in case I could hurt you or something.”
“Can you shift and hurt me?” she asked. I couldn’t blame her for that assumption. I was already over a hundred pounds heavier than her.
“No, I can’t, but you can crush me,” I admitted sorrowfully. The thought of her wanting someone else would end me. It would be like she had died. Creed didn’t tell me that outright, but I understood his warning. Just like any of us wolf shifters, if we lose our mate we follow them to the grave.
“That’s bullshit. I’m not as strong as your teenagers you said,” she said disbelievingly.
“No, you’re not physically strong enough to kill me, but you can leave me for someone else, and I can’t live without you.”
“I wouldn’t ever leave you, Hunter,” she promised. Fuck if I didn’t want to take her back to the house to lay her out and dominate her pussy. She deserved it for her honesty. She was getting nailed somewhere in the resort today.
It took only fifteen minutes to get there, but it seemed like forever. All I kept thinking about is how I could smell her desire and ways to make her happy. I wondered what she liked to do for fun.
