CHAPTER SIXTEEN

REBEL

“How was school, buddy?” Wolf said to Deacon when he and my mom walked into the house.

We are showered, dressed, and waiting in the living room like an average couple. Like a family, and Deacon is not fooled in the least. His little face is scrunched up, and his eyes are full of questions.

“Come sit with us, baby. We need to talk about our new…dynamic.” I stumble with my words, trying to figure out how to explain the changes that are coming.

“Are we going to be normal now?” I tilt my head at his question.

“Nah, buddy, never that. But things are going to change. Slowly so you can keep up. I want to be a part of your life. Would that be ok with you? I’ve missed so much already, so you’re gonna see me around like today. You looked confused when you got home to see me here. Were you upset with that?” Wolf is leaning in so he’s at Deacon’s level and speaking to him like he’s an adult.

I always treat him like he has a choice in his life because making all his decisions was never my style. I’m not sure if Wolf picked up on that or if this is how he wished he was treated as a child. I sit back in thought.

His childhood stories influenced the style of parenting I use for our son. I didn’t want the the past to repeat itself. Fuck me. Wolf might not have been here the last few years, but his presence was never far away. I shake my head with a smile on my face.

“Ma?” Oh shit, Deacon must have asked me a question.

“Sorry, baby. What was that?” Matching eyes stare at me.

Wow.

Deacon’s hair may be dark and curly like mine, but otherwise, I cloned Franklin. He smirks at me as if reading my mind.

“Dad gonna live with us now like all the other parents do?” Ah, that’s what I missed.

“Well, not exactly. He lives and works in Reno. So I guess he’ll be with us part-time.” He frowns at my words.

“Unacceptable. I’m too much work for part-time duties. He should move.” Not a question but a full-on statement, and Jesus, is he demanding in his tone.

“Buddy, do you know what a compromise is?” I roll my eyes at Wolf.

He’s going to get a crash course in fathering a genius.

Deacon rolls his eyes and stands up with his hands behind his back. Precisely as he does at his spelling bees, then he clears his throat and raises his chin.

“Compromise is an agreement or a settlement of a dispute that is reached by each side making concessions.” He sits down and rolls his eyes.

“That was last year’s spelling bee winner. Less attitude, little man. We all know you aren’t the average kid. Your Dad needs time to learn that too.” I pat Wolf’s knee as I reprimand Deacon for being sassy.

“Sorry, Ma.” He barely stops the eye roll when he says it.

Wolf chuckles and nods at us.

“Ok, so then here’s mine.
