On another ship in a distant system, Ath’grek watched as his technician finished manipulating the lock on yet another hatch.

“Did you get it this time?”

“We’ll soon find out.” Tagaram was unperturbed by his leader’s attitude. None of the others had his skill with security systems, not even the Tegortha-cursed Meligornians. They needed him.

He grunted as he turned the locking mechanism and pulled, both surprised and relieved when the door responded.

“What did I tell you?” He smirked and gestured for Ath’grek to take the lead while he held the door.

The Dreth leader didn’t hesitate. He’d brought his team into the maintenance duct Karath’s people had found but felt he needed to save face. After all, he’d allowed the tark-livered mages to beat him by finding the duct when he could not.

He’d gone only a few paces before he realized he needed one more thing.

“Which way?”

Karath snorted but pushed past his and Ath’grek’s people so he could walk beside the Dreth.

“It’s imprecise,” he warned, hauled a tablet out, and handed it to his companion.

The warrior placed a hand on his shoulder when he turned to move farther down the line. “I’ll need you there if we encounter any trouble,” he snarled.

“Are you afraid you can’t handle it on your own?” The Meligornian sneered and locked eyes with him.

“Every warrior knows battles are won together,” Ath’grek replied scornfully. “They want us to find out what the Witch’s company thinks it can achieve with this vessel. Reports have come in that the ships we came in on carried items and equipment from One R&D Meligorn as if that is a new venture for her.”

“It is a new company,” his collaborator told him in superior tones, “one that is able to operate separately from its counterpart on Earth and only recently set up. If it is sending equipment here, the Earth company doesn’t have it. It must be something to do with magical energy and our employer will want to know what exactly they’re doing that needs it.”

The Dreth grunted and led them through the duct. He gave the junction leading to life support a meditative look and pushed on. “We’ll try here,” he declared and stabbed one large fingertip onto the device.

Karath glanced at it and nodded. He studied the screen and pointed. “That one’s closer. Do you think their purpose is the same?”

Annoyed, Ath’grek studied the display carefully. It didn’t take him long to realize the mage had a point. The chamber he’d indicated was closer. He’d also raised a second good point. Did the four circular hollows in the center of the ship have the same function or was it merely the shape they shared?

“There’s only one way to find out,” he replied. “We’ll take yours first since it is closer, then go to the next.”

“Do you want to investigate them all at once?” The Meligornian was shocked.

He studied him carefully. “This might be the only chance we have. If it is, I want something substantial to take to our employers.”

“To maximize your profit?” The sneer returned but he merely gave the mage a toothy grin.
