Chapter Twenty-two
âAs you ask,â Snow said. It made sense that Five Moons could use the comfort of other wolven. What sheâd done had to have been draining.
âThank you,â the Alpha said quietly.
They made their way down the hall to the stairwell up to the penthouse. Snow tried to close her ears to the muffled crying coming from behind the door theyâd just left. There were times when excellent hearing was a curse. Five Moonsâ shoulders stiffened until they could no longer hear the sobs, though she didnât relax until they were back in her rooms.
The Alpha stared glassy-eyed around the living room before gesturing vaguely toward half the apartment.
âI donât know what that means,â Snow said.
Five Moons snorted a half-laugh. âYou know what, neither do I.â She dropped onto a small couch, landing like her legs had given out under her.
Snow hesitated. The Alpha smelled like despair. âShould I get Naomi and some of your other wolven? You should be surrounded by pack right now.â
âOh god, no.â Realizing how harsh the response sounded, Cassidy shook her head hard enough to send her hair flying about her shoulders.
âOkay.â Still Snow hovered by the doorway.
âI canât beâ¦They make meâ¦â Cassidy buried her face in her hands. âYouâre the only one I can be straight with about how fucked I am. This whole thing is a shitshow, and Iâm actively making it worse for everyone here.â
âOh no.â Snow flew across the room and slid onto the couch next to Cassidy. She threw her arms around the Alpha and held her tight. âYouâre not the one making things bad.â
âReally.â Cassidy relaxed into Snowâs embrace. âI donât see that Iâm improving things. And now Iâve made my mom cry.â
âYou are in a hell of a situation.â Snow squeezed Cassidy. Her wolf moved inside her, until it felt like she too was settled against the Alpha. âVery little of it is your own making.â
âVery little? I see how you are.â The words might have been meant to be joking, but there was a little too much venom lurking behind them.
âIf Iâd told you none of it was your fault, youâd have blown me off completely. Cassidy Anne Nolan, Alpha of the North Side Pack, you have a problem with responsibility.â
âWhat?â Her voice cracked in distress as Cassidy tried to push Snow away.
âYou do.â Snow loosened her hug but didnât let the Alpha go completely. âYou take on too much of it, even when it doesnât belong to you.â When Cassidy tried to interject, Snow kept talking. âYou are responsible for the welfare of your pack and yourself. You arenât responsible for the actions of those outside the pack. Not whoever is taking your packmates, not your sister and/or whoever made her disappear. Not even your mom.â
âButââ
âYou do the best you can with the tools and information at your disposal,â Snow said. Cassidy still smelled of deep sadness, but it was starting to lighten. Snow would be damned if she was going to allow this wolven to self-destruct before her eyes.
