The squadron ground crew, together with Rex, had a more straightforward journey by troop train to Scotland, where they had time to set up temporary camp at the airfield and started to organise the squadron affairs prior to the arrival of the Swordfish.

When at last the aircrew arrived they were billeted at the old gabled Ugadale Arms Hotel overlooking Machrihanish beach. Roy settled down in his shared room to write:

We arrived this afternoon. The hotel where we live is quite nice but nothing out of the way. We are right on the sea. A lovely great sandy beach and rollers and then behind us quite high hills. There is also a golf course just outside the hotel gates, very nice.
