The little café was crowded and noisy but Sarah decided it was a nice change of scenery. They took their iced cappuccinos to a table on the patio where they could catch some afternoon sun.

“Hey Luke! How’s it going?” A tall, skinny guy with spiky blond hair approached the table.

“Can’t complain,” Luke shrugged. “Tim, I’d like you to meet Sarah. She’s visiting here for the summer from Toronto.”

“Spending the summer slumming, are ya?” Tim laughed loudly. “Maybe I should spend some time in the big city. I didn’t know what I was missing before now.” He nudged Luke and gave him a thumbs-up.

“Tim!” A chunky redhead with a tight black Harley Davidson t-shirt yelled from the parking lot. “Get your butt in gear. We’re gonna be late!”

“Gotta go, the master calls.” Tim slapped Luke on the back. “Later!”

“Saved by the redhead,” Luke said, grinning. “Tim’s a little hard to take at times but he’s harmless. By the way, sorry if I didn’t exactly ask if you wanted to go for a coffee.” Luke looked down at his hands. “I guess I didn’t want to give you the option of saying no.”

“No problem. I could have said no.” Sarah sipped her cool drink, surprised at the apology.

“You’ve probably had more than your share of people planning your life for you, as it is.”

Sarah looked at him in amazement. “How did you guess?”

“For starters, I don’t think it was your idea to hang out with me that day you came to Maggie’s. Secondly, I’m guessing Wolfville was not your idea of a vacation destination.”

Sarah laughed. “You got that right! But it’s not as bad as I thought it was going to be.”

“That’s good to hear.”

They chatted easily about Maggie and the goings on at the market and about Sweet Betsy. But Sarah couldn’t get the LeBlanc family out of her mind. The more she thought about it, the more convinced she was that she had to make one more trip to the past.

“Where do you go?” Luke asked out of the blue.

“What do you mean?”

“Sometimes you go all quiet and you get this strange look on your face. I can tell your mind is far away.”

Sarah blushed. “I guess I’ve spent too many hours on my own. I’m not very good company.”

“That’s not what I meant. I just wondered what you were thinking about.”

Sarah thought about it for a moment. Should she tell Luke the truth? He would think she was crazy, but then he already thought she was crazy.

“I need to get more information on the deportation,” she began. For the first time she looked Luke straight in the eye, wondering if she had the courage to say what was on her mind.

“Oh yeah, the school project.”

“It’s not exactly a school project,” Sarah paused clenching her hands together. “I have to go back.”

Luke eyed her suspiciously. “Please tell me you’re talking about going back to your grandparents’ house.”

Sarah shook her head. “To help Anne.” It was almost a whisper. “I need to warn the LeBlancs about the deportation.
