Chapter 9
Daniel drew in a deep, shaken breath, stood up, and went over to the sink. âI donât have to tell you that,â he said almost roughly. âItâs obvious, I should think.â
âItâs not obvious to me. Is it that youâre afraid for your job?â
âNo.â Now he sounded angry. âIâm almost finished with the job anyway. Iâll be on my way back to Ireland soon.â
Sara bent her head so that her loose hair swung forward, making a screen for her face. âOh,â she said in a very small voice.
He stared at her for a moment. The sound of crickets humming came from outside the windows, and from the living room, the rumble of his dogs snoring. He stared at the tender white nape exposed by Saraâs parted hair. He could almost feel the smooth flesh of it in his hands. He imagined what her body would feel like under his in bedâ¦.
He shook his head as if to clear it. What had he been saying? âIâm going to buy some horses before I go home. Henryâs been helping me look about.â
Sara raised her head very slowly. âI see.â Her voice was quiet. She stood up carefully. âWell, then, perhaps you can give me that motorbike ride home.â
Her face had assumed its familiar guarded look. All of a sudden he felt he could not bear to see her look that way. âDonât you see what you are doing to me?â His voice was almost desperate. âIâm not like B.J., Sara. I canât be satisfied with just a few kisses. I should not have asked you in here. We should not be alone here together. It isnât safe....â
His voice broke off as Sara turned to him, her face suddenly illuminated. She crossed the room slowly until she stood before him, and then, with the simple trust of a child, she laid her cheek on his shoulder.
âIâm always safe,â she said, her voice a little muffled, âif Iâm with you.â
Without any volition on his part his hand came up to caress her hair. It was like silk. He curved his fingers around the nape of her neck. It felt fragile to him; she was so fragile. His hand slid along the line of her jaw to her chin and tilted her head up. Then he kissed her.
This time her mouth was like honey, opening immediately under the pressure of his, yielding, responding, telling him without words that whatever he wanted of her, he could have.
âSara. Love.â His voice was almost a croak and his mouth moved over her face, kissing her eyelids, her cheeks, then coming back once again to that tantalizing mouth. She was arched up against him, her slender body taut and trembling. He slid a hand beneath the fabric of her bodice and touched her breast. It was as silky and smooth as the rest of her. He felt her nipple stand up hard against the palm of his hand, and he groaned.
âDo you want to go into the bedroom?â she whispered.
