“Danny, I’m not sure what you are asking me to do here.”

“You know exactly what I am asking you to do.”

His voice was hard, immutable. Sarah did know what he wanted and she didn’t blame him. But was she ready for this? She wanted to be more to him than just a business partner. She was overjoyed that he wanted more than that too, but he was asking her to simply—basically—announce to the entire world that they were more than that.

And what was wrong with that?

Nothing.

So why was she being so reluctant?

The years of hiding their friendship had taken a large toll on him and she knew that. It had been hard for her as well, but lying there next to him, she began to wonder why she’d been so cowardly. Why was she still being so cowardly?

What did she have to lose?

So maybe the people she had known all of her life would scoff because she wound up with the son of the maid and gardener. So what?

It was more than that. She wasn’t really afraid of that kind of hurt. She was afraid of being hurt by him. Danny could be cruel, or at least he’d had that ability before. He had waltzed up to her the day after their last argument with that little blonde hanging off his arm like a big-breasted chunk of candy. He smiled at her even though he had to have known how badly that hurt her.

What if he decided to hurt her again? Could she stand that?

“Danny, I don’t know that I’m ready for all this. I mean, I just moved back to town and I haven’t seen you in years and what if we don’t really like each other very much anymore?”

Danny scowled. She was being entirely reasonable. She had every right to wonder if this was just the culmination of years of pent-up desire and maybe it was. He said,”Okay, I can see your point. We need to slow it down somewhat. It’s possible that we have changed so much that we aren’t the people we used to be. So let’s get to know each other.”

Relief flooded through her. “Thank you. I know it sounds like I’m balking and I know that was the problem then. I cannot apologize enough for hurting you then, I just hope you know that I had my reasons and I never meant for my reasons to cause you pain.”

He did know that. He’d always known that. It hadn’t made it any easier, although he wished that it did. “Okay, but if we start something here we’re not going to do it in darkness, Sarah. If you want to go out on dates, we will, but we’re going to go out. I’m not going to sneak around to meet you or drive twenty miles so none of your friends see me eating a meal with you.”

“You make it sound like we’re cheating spouses.” Her attempt at levity fell flat.

Danny sat up. The sheet fell away from his flat abdomen and she let her eyes wander appreciatively over him.
