It wasn’t all that unusual for me to have non-paying visitors in my office. Donovan had spent almost as much time here as some of my clients, usually kicked back in my chair with his feet on my desk while we ate lunch. Ryan came by once in a while if he needed an ear or—more often than not—ten bucks to put gas in his dad’s car or get something to eat.
This was only the second time Carmen had been up here, the first being when she gave me the shock of my life.
And now here she was again.
“You sure it wasn’t too much headache coming all the way down here?” I asked, closing the door behind us.
“Nah, it’s fine.” She smiled. “I needed a break, and I was climbing the walls in the apartment. I’m not keeping you from anything, am I?”
“Not at all. Must be nice being able to come and go whenever you like, though.”
Carmen laughed. “One of the joys of making my own hours.”
I took a seat on one end of the couch and gestured for her to do the same. Then I pulled my knee up onto the cushion between us and clasped my fingers together over it. “So, what’s up?”
“Does something have to be?” Her playful grin didn’t hide the apprehension in her eyes.
“Well, no, but on the phone, you sounded…” I trailed off, raising my eyebrows.
She sighed. “There’s a few things, actually.”
Hoping my own nerves didn’t show, I said, “Such as…?”
She ran a hand through her hair. “I need a little advice.”
“About?”
“My parents.”
“If it’s gift-giving advice, I’m not your man.” I put my hands up. “You should see the tie I picked out for Don’s dad last year for Christmas.”
Carmen laughed. “It wasn’t a noose, was it?”
I thumbed my chin. “Maybe…”
She rolled her eyes. “Can’t blame you. That guy’s a fucking cunt.”
“Yeah, he is.”
She tapped her fingers on the armrest. “Actually, that’s kind of why I needed to talk to you.”
I raised an eyebrow. “Your folks?”
Nodding slowly, she said, “My parents and this…situation. With you and Don.”
I inclined my head, a silent “go on”.
“Here’s the thing,” she said. “You and Don can sort of keep this under everyone’s radar. No one has to know unless you tell them, at least not until the baby’s here. But…” She chewed her lip and her cheeks colored. “This morning, well, let’s put it this way: I ended up wearing a skirt because my jeans didn’t fit quite as comfortably as they usually do.”
I swallowed. Yet another reminder this was actually happening. “Yeah, I suppose you won’t be able to hide it for much longer.”
“No, I won’t. Sooner or later, I’m going to have to tell my folks something.” She blew out a breath. “Isaac, I don’t know how to have this conversation with my parents.”
“If it’s any consolation,” I said, reaching across the cushion to put my hand over hers, “I don’t think any of us know how to have that conversation.”
“Yeah, but your parents took it well.
