Hollywood has made its own contribution to the leprechaun’s image, giving us no fewer than eight of its Leprechaun slasher movie series, with the aforementioned sprite becoming more demonic as they progress. We also had the slightly less throat-slashing leprechaun in Disney’s Darby O’Gill and the Little People (1959), while Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman coined the term ‘leprechaun economics’ in response to the Irish Central Statistics Office’s wonky GNP figures.

Of course, there is one genuine connection between leprechauns and fungi: consuming magic mushrooms is probably the only way you’ll ever see one.
