Chapter Nineteen
Merlo hesitated before quietly tapping on Kieran’s bedroom door. She couldn’t begin to imagine what confusing thoughts were running through Kieran’s head at the revelations she’d just heard. But she couldn’t leave her alone.
“Kieran? Can I come in, please?”
“I’m sitting on the floor right behind the door, so no,” Kieran answered in a sulky tone.
“I’d rather be able to speak to you face-to-face than through the door. And you know it’s not wise for you to be left alone.”
“Merlo, you’ve got padlocks littered all around this room to stop me from doing everything. Anything I could use as a weapon you have removed. I’m sure you’ve still got an angel watching over me even though I can’t see him. The only way I could kill myself in here now is by being smothered to death by Rafe’s damn cat that won’t leave me the hell alone. Just like none of you will.”
“We’re here to help you.”
“I don’t want your help. I feel like I’ve been thrown into some crazy hero-filled CW show where everyone has superpowers and I’m supposed to just blend in and think of it as normal. I can’t even think of myself as normal. But you all seem to think this state of affairs is natural. Business as usual. But it’s not.” Kieran sighed. “Demon hunters? Cops who can see angels? Not to mention an Oracle, and then there’s you, Merloina Bluetralis. Are you even a doctor?”
“I’ve always been a healer from the very start of my journey.”
“Just how old are you?”
Merlo laughed. “Were you ever taught never to ask a woman her age?”
“Do you even know how old you are?”
Merlo closed her eyes at the odd pain that question evoked in her. She knew exactly how long she had lived. She knew it and felt it every single day, the many months, the countless years, and the endless decades that had passed since her family had died. She’d walked a solitary path ever since. The last of her kind, living on to eternity. “I’m not so old that I can’t remember things. I might have years of living behind me, but I still have all my faculties working.”
“What do you want from me?”
“I need you to come back down and tell everyone your story, and then I want to tell you what happened to me yesterday. You can’t hide from this, Kieran. It’s too important and you’re too vital to it all.”
“What could I possibly bring to the table?”
“You are the key to all that these people fight for and against. Your visions are what they need to see.”
“You can’t just pry open my head and have what I see bleed out. Cragon would have tried it if he could have.”
“I’m told they have their own ways to facilitate that in a much more civilized way. I want you to come back and speak with us. We need you.”
“And once I’ve spoken to you all and jumped through your mental hoops, then what? You’ll let me go?”
“Do you want to go?” Merlo waited for an answer.
