My freshman adviser, a brilliant sociologist, listened patiently as I talked about the areas I wished to concentrate on in my studies at Hunter—political science, U.S. Supreme Court history, the civil rights movement, and art. She tried to convince me to change my academic concentration from the social sciences and the study of civil rights to art history and the study of modern painting and sculpture. Although she was a social scientist, my adviser felt that the world of politics, especially race politics, was too “grimy and uncreative” for my “cultivated” mind.
