Chapter Sixteen

Settling herself back on her sun bed at the Mar-a-Largo Club, Samantha waved over the waiter. “A margarita—and don’t be stingy with the tequila,” she snapped at him before shooing him off again.

She was still fuming about what had happened the night before—or rather, early that morning. The nerve of John, to allow her to massage and pamper and oil him—and then to sneak off the second she fell asleep to cavort with the governess in the kitchen. If he’d already been her husband, she would have given him a good slap for that one. As it was, she would just have to keep playing nice until after the wedding, at which point Melissa would suddenly find herself in search of new employment.

That was, if they made it that far. Samantha had known for some time now that John had a crush on Melissa, even if he didn’t realize it himself; but from what she’d seen of last night, that feeling had grown into something much deeper, and much more dangerous. What would he have said to her if she hadn’t walked in and interrupted? The thought made Samantha shudder. Three months away from the wedding, and it looked like she was going to have to fight tooth, claw, and nail to make sure it even happened.

It was enough to warrant at least two poolside margaritas, she decided bitterly.

Her sun was blocked as someone came to stand over her. Speak of the devil. Samantha opened her eyes, expecting to see the waiter returned with her drink—but instead it was another man, older but athletically built and trim, but definitely not dressed for a day at the pool in his khakis, loafers, and polo. He wore a pair of dark-tinted sunglasses and a baseball cap that looked brand-new and out of place, as though he’d purchased it on impulse at a gift shop.

Seeing he’d caught her attention, he smiled. “Mind if I join you?” He had a British accent—educated, clipped, and precise.

Samantha gave him another quick, appraising look before allowing a slow, seductive smile. What John didn’t know wouldn’t hurt him, after all. “Sure. I’m always in search of good company.”

The man took the sun bed next to hers, though he pulled the back up so that he wasn’t reclining at all, and angled the overhead umbrella so that he wouldn’t catch any extra sun. “You’re Samantha Emerson, aren’t you? John Verner’s fiancé?”

Samantha’s smile wavered. Well, there went her fun for the afternoon. “Sounds like someone’s been doing his homework. And who, pray tell, are you?”

Was it only her imagination, or did the man hesitate for a moment? “James. James Quinn. I’m a private investigator, looking for a woman named Olivia Franklin. Ring any bells?”

How boring. Not only was he here on business, but also it was business about something that had absolutely nothing to do with her. Samantha sighed, rolling over onto her stomach. “Not particularly. Is she a member of the club, or something?”

“Maybe this will jog your memory.
