Later that afternoon, Daniel pulled up at the curb next to what he thought of as Madisonâs townhouse. His doctor had reluctantly released him and his mother had fought him every step of the way as he got into his car. He had promised to call her as soon as he got to his condo so his father could drive him out to their house for him to finish recuperating.
He watched the house for ten minutes before he decided there was no activity. He had missed her. While he was lying around in a hospital bed being tortured by battle ax nurses, she had left without a trace.
He switched on the motor and turned up the heater. Just as he was about to put the car in drive, the front door opened and a man came out the door.
They looked at each other, considering. The man came around to the driverâs side and Daniel lowered the window.
âCan I help you?â he asked.
âIâm looking for Madison,â Daniel said.
The man hesitated. âYou donât look so good.â
âIâve been in the hospital.â
âHow do you know Madison?â
âI plan to marry her.â Daniel said. He had no reason to keep his intentions a secret.
âYouâll have to get in line.â
âWe worked together. How do you know her?â Perhaps he should have asked before he spilled his intentions.
âIâm her father. Were you on the train?â
âYes, with Madison.â
âShe was on the train?â
âYes, thatâs where she was working.â
âI donât really understand -.â
âIs she ok?â
âI donât think so. But I do think she will be with time.â
âWhatâs wrong? Is she hurt?â Heâd thought it was her memory, but it could be more serious. She could have been injured. His pulse quickened as Madisonâs father seemed to debate what to tell him.
âI donât really know. Something happened to her that she wonât talk about.â
âI know,â Daniel said somberly.
âIt had something to do with you?â
âNo sir. It happened before she got here.â
âThe shooting in Houston.â
âThere was a shooting?â Things started to fall into place. Daniel looked away as he was overtaken with a chill.
âYes, you didnât know?â
âNo, but that explains a lot.â
Daniel was cold. He may have been ready to leave the hospital, but maybe he wasnât ready to sit out in the cold. âCan I see her?â he asked, glancing toward the townhouse.
Her dad shook his head. âShe isnât there.â
The wind whooshed out of him. Heâd had the illusion of a reprieve, but heâd been too late after all. âSheâs gone,â he said. âI just came back to get her cell phone. She doesnât seem to able to keep up with it these days.â Madisonâs dad leaned against the open window. âYou donât look so good.â
Daniel reached over and turned up the heat. And tried not to allow his teeth to chatter.
âIâm meeting her and her mom at the airport,â he said, âto drop off her phone, then Iâm coming back here until tomorrow. Want to ride along?â
He could see Madison. His heart sang with joy. Right now he would have agreed to fly to the moon to see Madison.
