CHAPTER 5

I woke up the next morning and my head hurt. I hadn’t been drinking the night before, even though it would have been legal for me in England. It was stress. It was worry. It was the fact that Calvin thought he’d be able to explain the situation to me in a way that I’d think it was okay for us to flirt and maybe more.

There wasn’t an explanation for that. There was no explanation which would make that situation okay to me.

I didn’t want to call him. There was only one call that I wanted to make and it wasn’t to Calvin. In fact, it wasn’t to any person that I knew. I wanted to call the airline. I wanted to see when the next flight back to America was taking off and I wanted them to reserve me a ticket for it.

England was getting too messy. Claire still hadn’t forgiven me, for what I’d said. My dad cared more about pandering to her than about how I was feeling. Calvin had a girlfriend. What was the point in me being there?

I pulled out the scrap of paper from my phone case and looked at it. He was expecting me to call. He’d given me his number in front of his girlfriend and he was expecting me to call. I dialled in the first few messily written down numbers and then hesitated.

He thought there was an explanation. There was no explanation. There was no point. I deleted the numbers from my phone and put the slip of paper back into my pocket.

I was frustrated with myself. My resolve wasn’t strong. I knew that I would call him. I knew that I had maybe hours, maybe minutes, before my hand sank back into my pocket so that I could finish the number I’d started dialling.

So I did it. The fact that I knew it was inevitable spurred me on. I dialled the numbers into my cell and then I waited for him to answer my call.

“Lisa?” he asked.

“How did you know it was me?”

“I don’t get many unknown numbers calling me,” he explained.

“Oh, right,” I nodded, even though he couldn’t see me.

“Are you busy today?”

“I don’t think so.”

“Okay, I’m coming over to pick you up. Be ready in half an hour.”

“Where are we going? Do you even know where I live?”

“I’m not telling you and yes, I know where you live. It’s one of the big manor houses in the area. Pretty hard to miss.”

“I guess, I’ll see you soon then,” I said a little hesitantly.

“That you will,” Calvin agreed. “Lisa,” he said quickly, before I had a chance to mumble goodbye. “Thanks for giving me a chance.”

“I’m not giving you a chance,” I argued, even though I didn’t really have a leg to stand on. “You wanted to explain things and you can, but that doesn’t mean that anything will change.”

“I know that,” he assured me. “We’ll never know until we try, though.”

The way he said “we” felt good and bad at the same time.
