The bent galaxy

For fifty years, astronomers puzzled about why the Milky Way seemed to have a strange kink in the middle. Now astronomer Leo Blitz and his colleagues at Berkeley University in California suggest it is being distorted by the gravity of nearby galaxies called the Magellanic clouds.
