Oath for Villagers

Dr Kalam had great hopes from rural India, and he would often visit the hinterland of the nation—the schools, hospitals, administration and private CSR functions in remote villages. Whenever we interacted with rural citizens he would administer a special oath to them. When we went to Hindi-speaking villages, he would ask me to translate the oath as he spoke.

Children are as precious as wealth.

We will give equal importance to male and female children in the society. They will have equal claim to education and rights to facilitate equality in their growth.

We will raise a small family, for the health and prosperity of the society at large.

Our income is earned by hard work. We will not waste it by gambling and drinking.

We need to tell our children about the importance of education, as learning imparts knowledge, which paves the way to success.

We need to come together to protect our forests and prevent pollution.

We will plant at least five saplings.

We will become role models for our children.
