Chapter 11
His sleep was restless, between the new sensations radiating inside his body and the adrenaline rush from the earlier battle. His open shutter allowed in the bright light of the moon high overhead. Marta oblivious to him was humming as she broke through the waves. His leathers which he had kicked off as he rolled into bed were nicely folded on a shelf, and his jacket was hanging from behind a peg. A dinner, made of biscuits, cheese, and a light soup looked to have gone cold hours ago.
I know better than to waste food. Sliding over he fought the urge to stuff his self and methodically savored the food he ate. Marta twisted around to look at him. "Where to chosen? We have a whole world to explore," she asked. "I have no idea; I have never been out of Sandfell," he said dejected. "Pour water from the horn onto the wall," she said. Following her lead, he spilled water from his drinking horn on the wall that was opposite the window. As the water soaked through the finely polished grain, a green seed in the shape of a ship emerged from the middle of the wall.
"That seed represents us and the wall is a map, a secret map. On it are the places we have been. As we explore and find our way in the world, the map grows with us. It matters not what you know; the fun rests on discovering the unknown." He ran his finder down the lines that trailed the green seed. Sure enough, the twist and turns of the streams they headed down were represented by a thick root. He trailed his finger across the wall and stabbed down across a blank section.
"Here! Let's head here," he said. Marta smiled at him, "Let's do it." Feeling energized, he climbed into his old tunic and started steering the ship. As he delved into his newfound sense, he caught a flicker of something at the edges of his perception. "Marta, do you sense that?” The Waverunner who had been asleep while he was at the wheel roused at his tone. Instead of answering, he felt her probe the depths of the stream both north and south.
Hiss…
"What is it?" her hiss had disturbed him enough, "Vragoes; they've brought their Pale ships with them in force, and I think three, maybe four is heading this way, they're heading for the mouth of this stream, no doubt to cut off any runners and pick them off…They might've already sensed us; we must escape," she said. He let go of the wheel, "You drive," he sprinted for his room and jumped into his leathers. With his short sword on his shoulder and his darts on his back he was running for the mast when Ms. Glenda and Jennifer stepped out of their room.
"What is it Bryant?" the older lady asked. "White ships, three maybe four heading for us," he said. With a confused expression, the young lady looked to her mother.
