Chapter 13

“NOW WHAT?” DECLAN WHISPERED as we came to a stop behind a thick hedge. Although we’d almost caught up with Kieran, he’d managed to get away since he knew this area better than us.

Now he was running toward a big two-story house, and there was someone on the porch opening the door—a dark-haired man in a black suit who must have just come out of the silver car parked in the driveway. He turned around when he heard Kieran approach.

“Is that the Fire King?” I didn’t think Kieran would be going to a stranger. This had to be his house, which meant that man was his father.

“I don’t know. Maybe. We should take a photo.” Declan pulled out the phone Emma had given to him so we could call her if we needed anything, but as soon as he waved his hand, the screen cracked. He swore under his breath. “I forgot these things don’t work on magic.”

“Can we get a little closer? I can’t see them clearly.” Just as I made a dash for another bush, Kieran reached the porch. I couldn’t hear what he’d said, but his father’s fingers curled in his shirt. Azar shoved him toward the open door, and Kieran’s back hit the doorway.

A small gasp escaped my lips, but Azar’s attention was focused solely on Kieran, and neither of them had heard Declan or me shifting behind the bushes.

“Have you been drinking?” Azar’s voice was like thunder and loud enough for me to hear it. He roughly gripped Kieran’s chin, then pushed him inside and slammed the door behind them.

I turned toward Declan, raising my eyebrows in question. What were we supposed to do now? If that was really the Evil King and not some non-elemental who’d taken Kieran in as his own, then we had a problem, because Kieran was probably going to tell him about us, or maybe not.

“We should go. It’s not safe for us to stay here,” Declan said.

“But maybe we could get closer to the house instead. If the Fire King thinks his son’s drunk, and if Kieran doesn’t tell him what happened because he believes it’s all some kind of a hallucination, we might not be in any danger.” A part of me was worried and wanted to make sure that Kieran was going to be okay, because his father’s reaction terrified me. My parents had never grabbed me or pushed me like that, not even when they were mad at me.

“Yeah, and if the Evil King looks through the windows and spots us, he’ll go for our throats.”

“So you think we should just leave.” I glanced at Declan and then at the house, but I couldn’t tell where exactly Kieran and his father were.

“Yeah. Before someone sees us lurking here. Come on!” He urged me to follow him, already across the yard from me.

I reluctantly trailed after him, peeking back from time to time and hoping I’d see Kieran in a window. An odd sensation in my chest told me his room was upstairs, but the window was in darkness.
