Beckley raised his eyebrow and considered her carefully while watching her lips repeatedly purse and relax as she worked on this weighty idea. He wanted to kiss those lips but the island was too large for him to lean over and he didnât want to crowd her.
âDo you mean read more than surface thoughts?â
âYeees,â she said slowly, extending the word as if it were warm taffy being pulled and stretched. Her green-eyed gaze was sharp and assessing. âThink of something nasty about meâsomething youâd try to hide deep in your mind so that even you wouldnât want to hear it.â
âNo,â Beckley said, drawing back. His heart started racing. âI donât want to think anything nasty about you. Besides, I canât think of anything.â
Vie put her hands on her hips. âCome on,â she encouraged. âYou donât have to actually feel it or believe it. Just make up something.â
âI donât have that good of an imagination,â he argued. âWhy canât I just think of a number between one and ten?â
âBecause it wouldnât work. Five. You were thinking of five. See? You have to think of something youâd bury deep inside. Something you wouldnât want me to know.â
Beckley paced back and forth a few times, glancing at her and then away again. Finally he turned and challenged her. âLike what?â
âUh, like Iâve got knobby knees.â
âBut you have nice knees.â He watched her roll her eyes. âYou do,â he insisted.
âThank you but youâre missing my point. Think about my feet. How about that?â
âWhat about your feet? Youâve got lovely feet.â
Vie ogled him.
âWhat?â
She came around the island, toed off her sneakers and stripped off her socks. Then she stood there and waved at her feet. Beckley looked down. First he scrutinized the left foot and then he stared at the right.
âIâm not seeing what you see, I guess,â he said at last. âWhatâs wrong with them?â
Vie heaved a sigh and spoke in the tone of voice of someone admitting a great misfortune. âMy baby toes stick out from the rest of my toes at an odd angleâthey have since birth. Donât you see it? Everyone else notices.â
Beckley hunkered down and examined the really rather minute splaying of her baby toes. He shook his head. âYouâre right. Theyâre hideous. How could I not have noticed before? Theyâre so repulsive.â He looked up at her to be certain sheâd understood the mocking sarcasm in his voice. She looked murderous. Staring her in the eyes, he said, âIf Iâd noticed last night I would have kissed them better. Violet. Theyâre adorable.â
Vie growled at him. She hopped about on one foot and then the other as she put her socks back on. âEveryone in The Family thinks Iâm a freak.â
âWell, I donât.â
âOkay. Okay.â She huffed while leaning against the island and slipping on her shoes. âHow about you think something mean about my behavior. That shouldnât be too hard. Lots of people think Iâm too insensitive or too arrogant or too bossy.â
Beckley felt so uncomfortable he thought he might lose his breakfast.
