After the Crown’s appeal of the Supreme Court decision, which they lost, the lawyers began interviewing us, getting set for a new trial. A plea bargain was offered, with all three of us taking a life sentence with a ten-year par-ole eligibility. It wasn’t the greatest deal, but I didn’t want to put everyone through the whole ordeal again. The lawyers felt that since we had already served five years, with day parole eligibility in three, it was a pretty good deal. I refused to take the deal unless Harry was released, as much as I loathed the man. Actually, I thought he was a piece of crap. But I didn’t want him serving a life sentence for something I’d done. Ryan was furious with me; it was Harry’s fault Ryan was ever found out. I agreed with Ryan on that. Those were the facts. However, I held steadfast. Harry must be cut loose. The Crown relented.

Ryan and I pled to second-degree. Harry agreed to a six-month sentence on an inclusive charge, so that he could not sue the state for wrongful conviction and imprisonment. Ryan and I would never talk to each other again.

The “deal” my lawyer was so high on was to turn out to be one of the biggest mistakes of my life. I should have taken the trial, and let the real story come out — the real background of each “player.”
