CHAPTER

SIXTEEN

When Chase and I got back to the resort, we went our separate ways. I had to meet Kristen at the pool, and he probably had children and orphaned kittens to rescue or something. I went back to my villa and changed, then headed to the massive infinity pool that, like everything else here, overlooked the glittering Pacific Ocean. My feet were sore by the time I’d walked around the length of the pool and found Kristen baking slowly in the sun on her lounger.

“How was your date?” she asked me from under a hat easily as large and round as the Capitol Records Tower.

I crawled onto the pool lounger beside her and put my towel over my head.

She blocked out the sun as she leaned closer. “That bad, huh, babe?”

I dragged the towel down so I could see her but kept it in front of my mouth in case I needed to suffocate myself any minute now.

“I mean,” I said through a mouthful of cotton, “it wasn’t actually a date. Which is lucky, because I made myself about as sexually and romantically desirable as Gary Busey on a bender. Like, you can snort coke off your dog, you know? We’ve all been there. But don’t tell anyone about it.”

She gave a sympathetic grimace. “Was it really that bad?”

“I spilled my guts about all the sex and drugs,” I said. “I wasn’t specific, but I did mention drugs three times, just to really get the point across. Meanwhile, he works with children. He’s a speech pathologist who teaches children how to talk.”

Kristen recoiled like she was a vampire and I’d just spat holy water in her face. “Wow.”

“I can’t compete with that.”

“Well, fuck him,” she said supportively. “You’re fabulous.” She lifted a skinny arm and waved her hand in the air. A waiter in a white polo shirt and shorts hurried over, a smile plastered on his face. “Raul, can I get another mojito? And one for my friend too. Thanks, hon. You’re a lifesaver.”

Then, because one thing I’d developed in the last decade was a rat-like sense for exactly when to leave a sinking ship, I turned my head just in time to see a couple approaching the far end of the pool. Derek and Sofie.

Fuck my life.

“Hey,” I said. “I’m going to head back to the villa. I think I’ve had too much sun already.”

“Ryan!” She pouted. “I just ordered you a mojito!”

“Drink it for me,” I said, because we both knew she would. I stood up, my towel bunched around my neck, and hurried away from the pool before Derek and Sofie saw me.

I was regretting not waiting for that mojito by the time I was halfway across the perfectly manicured lawn to the villas. Where could I get one of those golf carts to drive around in? And yet, when I staggered up to the Sunset Villa, instead of going inside and cracking the seal on a ten-dollar bottle of spring water so pure you could perform surgery in it, I kept staggering until I reached Chase’s villa.
