Chapter Five

Over the next month, Delton found himself quickly

assimilating to life as a free man. Just as Vicen had predicted,

Delton found a job. It was in the kitchen of all places. After being

denied meals for so long, Delton delighted in being able to work

around so much food. And if he stole an extra bite here or there,

nobody seemed to care.

Delton was quickly gaining his weight back, and he no longer

looked like a walking skeleton. He was also making a lot of

friends among his fellow warlocks. His favorites, aside from Sira

of course, were Andor, closely followed by Blaze. They both had

a way about them that always seemed to make Delton laugh.

As for Vicen, while he had taken over the job of training

Delton on how to fight, the two of them continued to dance

around the whole mate issue. They hadn’t even so much as kissed

since that night when Delton had been released from the hospital.

It started to become a point of frustration for Delton, because

the more time he spent with Vicen, the greater his attraction to

the warlock grew.

Delton ran down the hall, because he was late yet again for a

training session with Vicen. It seemed like he’d been doing that a

lot lately. It wasn’t that Delton could help it, either. He’d become

so caught up in something that he’d lose track of time and then

bam! He’d be behind once again.

By the time he made it to the training room, Delton was out

of breath and sweating. He took one look at Vicen’s face and

knew he was in trouble. Vicen’s lips were pressed together in

a tight line, and his right temple was ticking. In the month that

Delton had come to know Vicen, he knew that was never a good

sign. That meant that Vicen was good and ticked off. Which

meant that Delton was in for one hell of a workout session.

“Come on!” Delton pleaded. “This time it wasn’t my fault.”

“That’s what you say every time you show up late.”

“This time I really mean it. Sira insisted I watch some sappy

girl movie with her, and she wouldn’t let me leave until it was

over.”

Actually, the movie had been pretty good, but Delton wasn’t

about to admit that. Not any more than he was going to fess up

to the amount of junk food that he and Sira had indulged in.

Delton had finished off a whole bag of chips by himself.

Vicen tossed some sparring padding at Delton. “Put this on.”

Delton caught it just in time before it hit him in the face. “You

don’t need to be rude about it.”

“Don’t test my patience.”

Delton clamped his mouth shut and began to put on the

equipment. “I still don’t see why I have to learn how to fight. It’s

not like I’m ever going to go out on any missions. Upton doesn’t

need my skinny ass getting in the way of the real soldiers.”

“Maybe not, but if this place is ever attacked—and chances

are it will be at some time—you’ll need to be able to fight your

way out to make it to the rendezvous point.”

Delton froze as fear went through him.
