Chapter Eight
Tali
Blinding white light burns my tear-filled eyes. I clutch the side of my head, the impact making my temples throb. My fingertips feel wet and the spot on my skin stings when I press them to it. I yelp when I pull them away and see that they’re stained a bright red.
My teeth chatter uncontrollably as I try to catch my breath.
I turn toward Alain who is gripping the steering wheel of my car…the car that I couldn’t drive because I’d had way too much champagne after seeing the latest tabloid eruption come to life, starring none other than my boyfriend.
He’d been cozying up to some C-list actress from America in a corner at a party we’d just left. Did he really think I wouldn’t notice? Or maybe that I’d be too drunk to care?
It took everything in me not to pull her away by her long blonde hair extensions and snap his neck on the spot.
It was over in that second.
We were over.
Carrying on behind my back was one thing, but doing it out in the open?
Done and done.
I needed a distraction because I was lonely.
He was it.
But I’m past all of that.
Or am I?
I swallow the sob rising in my throat, gripping the dashboard.
He reaches out and yanks my face toward him, his eyes black beads filled with evil, his words dripping with malice. “I own you, Tali. So cry as much as you want now, but tomorrow, remember this. Your life is mine.”
The nightmare that torments me, whether or not my eyes are closed, is once again on repeat.
I’d hoped that something would have replaced those horrific images and sounds last night, the ones that loop through my sleep-induced mind every time I fall into my bed. But no.
Cristian forced me away.
He was the one person who could have soothed my tortured soul and given me some peace.
Even if only for a few hours.
I lean over the balcony in my bedroom, breathing in the sea air. It doesn’t smell nearly as sweet as it did last night when I’d crashed into Cristian on the beach. For those few minutes, I felt free…freer than I have in weeks.
I opened up to him in a way I swore I’d never do again after my experiences with that asshole Alain. I told him things I haven’t shared with anyone. Not even Kaz, my twin and the closest person to me in the world.
I fanned out all of my cards, showing Cristian my hand with no hesitation.
But he passed on it.
He passed! He sent me away!
I practically threw myself at him and he pushed me aside.
Because he, like all other men, is completely full of shit.
I’d like to say I finally learned my lesson, but let’s be real.
I fell for the lines.
And the panty-melting smile.
And the eyes I thought I could happily drown in.
I shared my deepest thoughts because I thought he cared.
Because I needed someone to talk to, someone to just listen without passing judgment.
We’re the same, him and I.
