“Just what do you think you’re doing!” a woman's hissing voice called out. Shadows flocked to the figure, clinging to her like sordid pets.

Faye blinked her hazel eyes, trying to focus on the slithering apparitions before her. “You! What do you want! Is my mortality not enough for you?”

Amusement flickered across the other woman’s face, but a sneer distorted it. “Oh, little Faye decided to grow a backbone, did she?” she cooed as she stalked forward, bent down and cupped Faye’s chin with cold fingers. “I’m tired of how you are playing a weak fool; that is not why you are there. We have bigger games to play, little one.”

She jerked her chin away and swiped at the hand which held her in place. Narrowing her eyes, she rose to her knees. “I am not playing any games, Nymiane,” her voice sounded foreign to her, more commanding.

“I sent you to create something, not hide in some musty house playing damsel.”

“Create what?” she shouted, dark hair tumbling over her shoulders.

Nymiane’s features smoothed, she waved her pets away to reveal her beautiful face. In her hands she held a mirror, she spun it around, so the glass reflected her face.

“Now, that is for me to know and for you to find out, soon.” She laughed and dipped her head forward, baring her teeth in a cruel smile. “But take a good, long, hard look at this face. The beauty your people revere…”

The mirror showed her face, but mortality didn't mar it, it was smooth as porcelain and without blemish. Her hair was as rich as it once was, but it was her eyes that held something else—something new—and it terrified her. “No,” she whispered.

“You had so much spark before, why extinguish it now? I sincerely thought you’d fight more than this. I didn’t take you for a weakling,” she crooned.

A noise escaped Faye, and deep burning anger ignited in her belly and before she knew what she was doing she lashed out, her hand connecting with the dusky features of Nymiane.

She stumbled back, snickering as she lifted a hand to wipe along her cheek, crimson flecked her fingers. “I always knew how to get under your skin, Sister.”

Although Faye had slapped her, she felt just as stunned as though Nymiane had done it to her. “You dare call me your sister after all of this?”

“You’re utterly useless like this, and I’ll do us both a favor and pull some strings.” She stalked forward, and as Faye began to evade her, she commanded the shadows around them to bind her. “You’re in Etain’s country, and you’ll find your powers weaker here. And this?” She used a nail to motion toward the shadows. “The shadows are stronger here than in Alindor, you’re halfway to my realm, Sister, and you’re going to suffer.”

Suffer, as if she hadn’t suffered so far.

A wry smile curled dark red lips up as if she had read Faye’s thoughts. “Oh no, you haven’t suffered. Do you think wearing a mask
