Chapter 9

I get up and take a shower before I text Ellie the next morning.

Me: Back from Denver and ready to start!

Ellie: Thank God! I don’t know if I could’ve gone another day without you.

She sends a link to a Zoom call along with another text. Hop on when you can.

I have to take care of my main responsibilities first, so I go downstairs and find Jack in his home office.

I knock lightly on the doorframe and step in.

He doesn’t look up at me. “I need to head into the office today.”

“Okay,” I say. “What time?”

“Whenever you’re ready.” He still doesn’t look up from whatever he’s working on.

“Is there a place there where I can work?”

He nods.

“Great. Let me just grab my laptop and then we can go.” I text Ellie and let her know I need about a half hour.

On the way to his office, he asks, “Do you have something to work on?”

“I’m starting my new position with Ellie today.” I refrain from making some joke about how it almost feels like he cares.

“Oh, that’s right. Good luck.”

“Thank you,” I say softly.

He nods once curtly without responding.

Once we arrive on his floor, he leads me to an empty room directly beside his. It’s quite a bit smaller, but at least he’ll be close and I can keep an eye on the doorway to see if he’s coming or going. My temporary office is simple, outfitted with a desk, a chair, a laptop dock, two chairs facing the desk, and one hell of a view—the same one in Jack’s office that looks out over the Wynn.

I decide to position my chair so I can’t see out the window. No need to make myself even crazier by looking at the hotel where we first met, a constant reminder of what I can’t have.

He’s standing by the door on his way out when he says, “I have meetings all morning, so I’ll be occupied at least until lunch if not later.”

I want to ask if this is about his money that’s tied up in the desert, but it’s not my place to ask. He disappears into his office and I dial up Ellie, who admits me to our meeting room.

“Good morning, Kate,” she says, all smiles.

“Hey! How are you?”

“Great. I’ve got Luke on baby duty so we have some time to chat and I can fill you in on what I need you to do.”

“You guys are so cute.” I smile.

She lifts a shoulder. “He’s the best. He makes it easy and I got lucky.”

My heart twists.

I want that.

I want a relationship that’s easy, something where we’re both in it and we don’t have these outside ties pulling us away from each other.

Maybe I need to put a pin in these feelings I’m having for Jack. He’s just not someone I’ll ever be able to have that with. I realize everyone comes with baggage, but his baggage is Michelle.

But when I think about it, Luke’s baggage was Michelle, too...yet he and Ellie still somehow make it work.
