So basically Natty, and every other child in my town, is slowly turning into a vampire bat. If we don’t do something they’ll soon sprout wings and fly away into the night.

That is not going to happen!

I took Sphinx back home with me from the zoo tonight. I thought keeping her nearby might be a good idea if the vampire bats come back, in case she can help in some way. She’s under strict instructions not to mutter a word of English. I figured Mom wouldn’t mind a stray cat staying for a couple of days—it’s not like I’ve invited a yeti for tea again—but an English-speaking ex-vampire bat . . . no way! Plus, if Mom caught a whiff of what was going on with Natty, then she’d want to get involved. And it’s way too dangerous. This kind of stuff is best left to the professionals.

Sphinx slurped up the last of the milk I’d poured into a saucer on the kitchen floor. “Where am I sleeping tonight?”

“You can have my bed,” I told her. “But try to hide from my mom, just for tonight. I need to figure out what I’m going to tell her about you.”

“Where will you be sleeping?” Sphinx asked.

I gave her a mischievous smile. “Sleep is for wimps.”

Most people would freak out if they discovered their sister was being turned into a vampire.

But not me. Oh no! Do you know why? Because I’m Sammy Feral, Master of Weird. There’s no way the bats are having my sister, no way! I’ll do anything to make sure she’s safe.

The vampire bats will rue the day they decided to come to MY village!

I’m planning to sit up by Natty’s bed all night and fight off any bats that dare to come into her room.

I have drunk three cups of coffee (yuck!). I am armed with a cricket bat, a can of spray deodorant and a rolled-up newspaper and I am ready to FIGHT!

Any vampire bat that comes near Natty tonight will have me to answer to!
