CHAPTER 19

There’s no point in attending their meeting on Eli’s mental state. There’s nothing I can add to the conversation. Ryan agrees, he consoles me by saying that he will let me know what they decide after the meeting is concluded. That’s a waste of time too. For all their posturing, I know they will say yes. I’ve seen it in their eyes. They have a chance to resurrect a dead friend. I wouldn’t hesitate. They won’t either.

Instead, JT and I spend our time sprawled on the perfect green lawn. I can almost imagine time has remained constant as I stare up at the clouds. I can go so far as imagining the eyes that gaze upon the unchanged sky are still mine.

There is a stomp of feet coming from the house. I glance in their direction. Zander hasn’t joined the meeting either.

“Come join us, Zan-man.” JT pats at the grass.

Zander hesitates before slumping down next to us.

“You called me that when you were my commanding officer,” Zander says. “You were an intimidating man. So much so, that the first time I saw you in that body, I started calling you sir. You laughed so hard.”

“Sounds like you,” I poke JT in the ribs.

“Sounds like you, sir,” JT corrects me before laughing.

“I wasn’t to interact with you after that. In fact, if Truman had his way, I wouldn’t have been allowed near Cara either.”

“Well we’re all thankful that he didn’t get his way. Aren’t we, Doll Face?”

I can feel my cheeks redden. My eyes are focused on the sky above. “I wouldn’t have it any other way.” I manage to say without dying of embarrassment.

“I think I saw Maxon heading to the kitchen.” JT is on his feet and jogging to the house before I have a chance to protest.

I have a good line of sight to the house and I didn’t glimpse any movement. Even so, it’s hard not to be jealous of the relationship JT and Maxon have formed since meeting. I always thought what Jack and I had was rock solid. Apparently, I was wrong. I also never thought Jack would turn into a grumpy, bitter old man.

“How Jack talked to you before, it was wrong. I’m sorry he treated you like that,” I say to Zander.

“Don’t apologize for him. He has a lot of demons to work through.”

“Don’t we all,” I reply.

“With all the future’s technology at your fingertips, you and JT chose to come out on the grass and stare at the sky. I assume that was your idea?”

“It’s like time hasn’t changed out here.”

“It’s always calmed you. When we were at the compound, we used to lie on the ground and stare at the sky, talking. It was how we would fill the time before you went back to your waking life. Not that you knew that was what we were waiting for,” Zander says. “Unfortunately, it wasn’t a real sky, but there was no need to let you in on that little secret.”

“I guess it doesn’t matter if it’s real.
