A FAREWELL

“Stop staring and get back to work!” Elias barked at the men and women repairing Hannah’s Whisper as they gawked at Nyssa and Quinn.

Nyssa chuckled under her breath. Seeing him dote over his ship was, at the very least, entertaining. The crew seemed mostly absent, save for Max and Yuha, both watching the workers hired from Ocean’s Rest with their arms crossed.

“What are you two layabouts doing back on my ship?” Elias asked, striding up to Nyssa and Quinn with a bright smile. Fontaine skipped behind him, greeting them with a short wave.

“We’re here to say goodbye,” Nyssa replied.

Fontaine frowned. “Goodbye? We’ll be in port for another few weeks. Elias is being very picky about the repairs.”

“We’re the ones on the way out. A couple of us are going to Arcton to poke around the Night Vault. Aryis and Quinn think there’s something there that Ceril wants and will go back for.”

Fontaine’s frown grew deeper, and she turned to Quinn. “Oh, dear girl, do you think it’s a good idea you return to that place?”

Fontaine wasn’t asking a question that Nyssa herself hadn’t considered at least ten times since the previous night.

“I will be fine, Fontaine,” Quinn answered. “But I know where your concern comes from, and I appreciate it.”

Crossing over to her, Fontaine stroked her cheek for a moment before giving her a hug. The two women shared a bond that warmed Nyssa’s heart.

“We don’t know how long we’ll be gone. You’ll likely be out to sea again before we return to Ocean’s Rest,” Nyssa said. “And we couldn’t leave without saying goodbye.”

Elias crossed his arms. “I’m not happy to see you go. I half expected you might rejoin us. You know you’re a part of this crew.” He raised an eyebrow at Quinn. “I need the Pirate Queen…and Nyssa can tag along, although she’s a drain on our food stores.”

Quinn laughed, her arm still around Fontaine. “Let us deal with Ceril and then we’ll see. We could use some pirate money once all this is over.”

“I do owe you two a couple thousand gold marks for your crew work on the ship,” Elias said.

“Ah, keep it to cover these repairs. I feel like we’re to blame for this damage,” Nyssa said, eyeing the black tarps draped over the back of the ship and the stacks of wood piled nearby.

“A generous offer, but not necessary. House Fennick is footing the bill for this. You know I pay my debts…if you’re working on this ship, you earn a cut.”

“Well then, transfer the money to the Fennick account and earmark it. Reece is sorting all that out for us,” Quinn said.

They did need the money. Being a Cursed God didn’t pay all that well, aside from Trick’s show in New Ibanis. Nyssa was grateful for Reece’s quick thinking on that, but she didn’t want to be dependent on House Fennick while waiting for their cut of the profits. There was something distasteful about accepting Lilliana’s money.

“We want to thank you
