MEL

I’d been dreading today for a long time so I was early getting to set. I don’t know why my brain thought that would be better but apparently dreading being at work equated to get there early. The lighting crew was still setting up today’s set and the cast was in makeup. So I was left pacing. Today was going to feel like my genitals were in a vice and someone was jumping up and down on them. No…worse. I didn’t even know what the worst mental anguish I could think of was. This. Exactly this. Watching the guy I was falling for making out with someone else.

“Hi, I’m Mel Finch and I need rehab for my Tobias obsession.”

Alfred barked at me.

“Shut up.”

Alfred stared at me.

I stared back and growled. “Stop judging me. I’ll talk to him.”

And I was going to. I just hadn’t figured out the right time yet.

“Are you talking to Tobi’s dog?” Quell asked.

“You’re high, mind your business,” I said.

“I’m not high yet.”

I’d been blocking it out of my head for weeks. Pretending it wasn’t going to happen. Tobias had settled into a good place as friends and I’d done a decent job of keeping my feelings for him to myself, so neither of us would have to deal with those things between us. It had been working. Well, too. We hung out frequently and our friendship was easy.

Today was going to test all of that and I wasn’t handling it well. I’d never been in this position as a director and I wasn’t sure how to process any of it. So I’d started pacing the set, with Alfred, waiting for everyone to get released from makeup.

Hale walked out first, probably because he was on time to makeup whereas I didn’t think Tobias had been on time for anything since we’d started production, only half of which was his fault. Hale’s spandex was torn down the front, and he was bloody around the mouth. His hair tousled in the ‘I’ve just won a fight’ way. He looked fucking good and I wanted to vomit.

“My boyfriend is hot,” Quell said.

“Yeah, I’m going to start sending him donuts every day.”

Quell arched a brow. “You’re trying to sabotage my boyfriend's fantastic body why?”

“Because he’s about to make out with Tobias.” I knew I sounded stupid even saying it out loud and there we as no reason to be jealous. “Him and I are enemies now.”

“Enemies? Don’t you think you’re taking this a little far?”

“No, absolutely not. We are at war. Tell him he can’t ever speak to me again.” I side-eyed Alfred, waiting for him to bark at me.

“You’re taking this a little far. You’re his director.”

“Careful or you’ll be dead to me next.” I glanced at Alfred who put his snout in the air. “See he agrees with me.”

“You know nothing is going to come of it, right?” Quell asked.

“Yes, I know.” It wasn’t about that. I had so many mixed emotions that I wasn’t even sure how to piece them out myself, let alone to him.
