MALIBU’S MOST UNDAUNTED
as time went by in Passages I started making friends. I got a new roommate, Rachel, who I really connected with. We were Frick and Frack—sharing clothes, playing music loudly, and singing all the time. We instantly became inseparable.
She and I were good at making sure we got whatever we wanted. Once, Rachel and I were alone at equine therapy, a form of therapy where a group tries getting a horse to do a particular action using nonverbal communication. It was a lesson in problem solving and controlling emotions, but Rachel and I saw it as an opportunity for fun. We weren’t allowed to ride the horses. No one was. Since it was just the two of us that showed up to class that day we figured we could bend the rules. We put on our cute pouty faces and convinced the head psychologist and the equine therapy trainer to let us ride. Of course, I took it too far and took the horse over a jump. That ended that, but it was only a matter of time before Rachel and I were at it again.
All around it was a good group of people at Passages. We had breakfast together every morning at 7:30 a.m. From there the day was filled with individual counseling and various meetings, as well as with morning meditation, time with a fitness trainer, acupuncture, and those sorts of things. Passages really focused on creating a sound mind and body. That was what I liked most about it. While getting acupuncture or a deep-tissue massage may sound more like a day at a spa than rehab, when you think of the toxins you put into your body as an addict you realize that all of those treatments really help clear you out. It seemed like an essential part of the process.
In the evenings we had free time to watch movies and hang out and bond as a group. Sometimes we would sit on the balcony together, talking until 1:00 or 2:00 a.m.
I was really excited and happy to feel like I had newfound clarity and friends. I thought my life was going to be perfect from there on out. I was on that pink cloud that people talk about where everything is great and perfect and happy.
There was a three-week period where we had an amazing group of people who clicked and who connected and supported one another. One morning we had a group session in the library and I don’t remember why, but we were joking around and something triggered this huge laughter. We were laughing so hard that the owner of the facility heard us from the other end of the house through the huge wooden closed doors of both his office and the library. He came in and couldn’t believe it. He had never seen such a happy group.
It’s one of those moments that I look back on and think that if I could hold on to it and remember
