Addie was sitting on the couch writing in her lesson plan calendar when her phone started ringing. The sound made her jump, which made Savannah giggle at her reaction.

“Who the heck is this?” she asked out loud when she saw the number she couldn’t recognize.

She thought about letting it go to voicemail, but answered it anyway. “Hello?”

“Hey Addie, it’s Logan.”

Addie was almost stunned silent. But in three seconds, she managed to put her hand over the receiver and exclaim to Savannah in a whisper, “Oh my heck, it’s Logan!”

Savannah immediately jumped to her side as she returned to the call. “Hey Logan, how’re you doing?”

“I’m doing pretty good. What are you up to?”

“Work stuff, actually.”

“Really, what kind of work stuff?”

“Lesson planning. I teach fourth grade.”

“Wait, so you’re saying you’re a teacher by day and a talented singer by night?”

“I guess so,” Addie chuckled. “I don’t know about being talented …”

“I’d like to hear more about it.”

“Well what do you want to know?”

“How about you tell me in person this Wednesday night?”

It took every ounce of will power to force down the delight that bubbled up inside her. Usually if a guy she met through dating sites had asked her out, regardless of how attractive he was in his picture, she’d be indifferent until she met the guy. But even when they did meet and went out a second or third time, she still couldn’t remember when she last felt excited for a date.

“This Wednesday night?” she asked.

“Yeah, I’d suggest this weekend, but that’s too far away for me.”

Again, she giggled, twirling her hair like a teenager. “I’d love to. What time were you thinking?”

“I was thinking six, if that works for you.”

“It works perfect,” she said, grateful she didn’t have any meetings that night.

“Great. Be sure to text me your address and I’ll pick you up then. Oh and bring your appetite, because we’re going to one of my favorite places.”

“And where might that be?”

“… It’s a surprise.”

After he said it, her stomach twisted a little. The last time she heard that, the “surprise” was everything less than pleasant. Even though he didn’t appear the sketchy type, she learned quickly that anything could have a decent wrapper but still be toxic.

“Yeah, considering we just met,” she said, “I think you should let me know what to expect. In fact, if you tell me where it is, I can meet you there.”

There was an awkward silence, and Savannah gave her a look that made Addie almost regret suggesting the idea, but she wasn’t going to risk having the past repeat itself.

“If you’re more comfortable with that, that’s totally fine,” he assured, and Addie sighed in relief. “Have you ever been to Ronaldo’s?”

“I haven’t, but I think I’ve heard of it.”

“Well prepare yourself, because you’re going to be amazed.”

Addie laughed. “I’d better; I have a feeling I won’t be disappointed.”

“Good, I’m looking forward to it.”

“Me too.”

“All right, well I won’t keep you from your lesson planning, so have a good rest of your weekend, and I’ll talk to you later.
