Chapter Seventeen

Lies and Wasp Stings

CARRED

I can feel Nora watching me.

Her feet are up on the passenger seat and her body is twisted in my direction. We’re on our way to meet her family and I’m trying to work past the nerves that have my stomach bunched in a knot. Nora, being a smart-arse, thinks it’s fucking hilarious, which in turn is pissing me off, so not only am I on edge, I’m fucking annoyed too. And Nora being Nora, it’s only a matter of time before she makes a snarky comment.

“What’s the matter McGuire? Looking a little stressed there.”

And there it is. I glance her way, my jaw tensing when I see the grin pulling at her mouth.

“You think this is funny?!” I growl. “I’m fucking sweating it here.”

“Poor baby. Want me to make it better?” she asks, trailing her fingers across my thigh, her hand pressing against my dick through my jeans.

“Yeah, ‘coz arriving at your parents with a raging hard-on is going to create the right fucking impression.”

“We could do something about it before we get there,” she suggests, deliberately biting her lip and tilting her head at a ridiculously sexy angle that’s meant to make me laugh, but instead has my dick thickening and my temper rising.

“Cut it out,” I snap, scowling when she lets out a low, husky laugh. “Never struck me you were a tease, Nora. You might want to think about what happens when we leave tomorrow,” I say, enjoying her suddenly wary expression. “Payback is a bitch,” I smirk.

“Damn.” Her hand slips away and I lift my backside from the seat, tugging my jeans at the crotch.

I hear her snigger at my obvious discomfort. Yeah, she’s going to get payback tomorrow. This girl can piss me off like no-one ever I’ve ever known; she has me so fucking mixed up I never know where she’s gonna take me. Nights spent twisted up in the bed sheets, the sex so intense and wild I feel like I might never recover. Days spent laughing at her cute, crazy behaviour, interspersed with arguments that spring out of nowhere, Nora’s hot-headed temper erupting as swiftly and unexpectedly as the sting of a static shock.

Occasionally, there are times when neither of us is prepared to back down; when shitty, petty disagreements about inconsequential things escalate into shouted accusations and counter-accusations that have Nora storming off or me snatching up the car keys and heading out to clear my head. More often than not, I’ll end up at Cooper’s and we’ll talk, maybe play a little pool, and once my mind has calmed and the urge to see Nora outweighs my stubborn refusal to accept any blame, I head back home to make it right.

Wanting Nora means accepting the crappy times; such as when the pressure of her studies, or dating a ‘jock-star’ as she calls me, spins her into sharp, shitty moods that have me questioning my sanity as to why I’m falling for this girl.
