Chapter Ten
Ari dressed for dinner just to have the pleasure of being clothed while she ate. She wore a simple white blouse and some old jeans. She stayed barefoot, though. She liked the feel of carpet under her toes. Eating with her fingers was blissful, and she sucked the grease from them instead of wiping them on a napkin. She caught Dale watching her once. "What?"
"Nothing. You're classy, Lassie."
Ari nudged Dale's leg under the table.
"How are you feeling post-change? I know you don't like spending that long as the wolf at a stretch. I know how it starts messing with your mind after a while."
"I'm good." Ari sipped her iced tea. "How have you been? I really did miss you these past couple of days."
"No complaints. There were a couple of times I wished I could just break in to Laura's apartment and have a conversation with you, let you know what was going on."
Ari tilted her head. "Well, you wouldn't have been alone. And maybe you would have made enough of a mess that Laura would change her locks. The idea of Echols having that much access to her life is just creepy beyond belief. I can't wait until I have a chance to face him down as Ari instead of Tule." She pointed across the table. "A name which, by the way, has grown on me. I like it."
"Good. Maybe we'll keep it for the time being."
When they finished their meal, Dale took their plates into Ari's kitchen and bent down to kiss her cheek. "Good to have you back, Ariadne."
"Thanks, Dale. I'm going to visit the Gavin House tomorrow morning. I'll call them tonight and set it up. So feel free to sleep in and get into work late."
Dale agreed and left the apartment. Once she was gone, Ari took the remaining side of macaroni and cheese and went to sit in front of the balcony with her laptop. She opened a document and began typing. She titled the file "Laura Gavin Surveillance, Day One," and closed her eyes to remember the events as they happened, sorting out her wolf memories as they were filtered through a human mind.
When she had a decent feel for the timeline, she started writing.

The next morning, Ari printed out her report of the first three days of surveillance. She also copied the file onto a disc and slipped it into the pocket of her coat. She hadn't slept a lot, but it was enough to make her feel refreshed. She had spent the morning practicing for her confrontation with Katherine Gavin, and she was certain she was ready. She didn't know if Echols would be there for it, but she almost hoped so. She wanted to be there if he tried to defend himself.
She drove to the Gavin House, still in shock that she had actually been inside. She buzzed at the front gate and identified herself, and the barrier slid open to let her in. Ariadne Willow, welcome guest at Xanadu.
