The following day, I was tied up with lessons and working horses for a few hours in the morning, but I caught up with Landon when he was coming out of my office after eating lunch.

“Oh, hey,” I said. “Just the man I was looking for.”

He raised his eyebrows as he zipped up his jacket. “What’s up?”

“Listen, about Thanksgiving…”

He winced and broke eye contact, fussing with something on his jacket sleeve instead of looking at me.

“My brother is hosting this year,” I said. “Why don’t you come with me?”

Landon’s gaze snapped to me, his eyes wide. “What?”

“There’s plenty of room, and my sister-in-law always makes way too much food.”

His skepticism was unmistakable. “But your brother knows what I am.” The words scraped across my nerves. Yes, Landon had a past—a very recent past—but I hated the idea that it defined him as much as it did for some people. Including himself, by the sound of it.

“He knows about your past,” I acknowledged. “But he believes in second chances too.” That wasn’t entirely a lie, if you counted giving horses second chances.

“Oh. That sounds… I mean, if your family is sure about someone like me coming to—”

“Not someone like you,” I corrected gently. “You.”

That seemed to bring him up short. He chewed his lip, then nodded subtly, and a faint smile came to life. “All right. Sure. Should I, um… Should I bring anything?”

I thought about it, then shook my head. “Nah. Like I said, my sister-in-law makes mountains of food, and my brother will lose his mind if anyone brings her another houseplant.”

Landon chuckled, making my heart go wild. God, he was so beautiful. “Okay. Well, if you think of something, let me know. Cash is a little limited, but…”

“Sure. I’ll let you know.”

“Perfect. Well, I should…” The smile faded, and he avoided my gaze.

“Something on your mind?”

“I, um…” His eyes were unfocused for a moment before he met mine again. “What we’re doing—this is still casual, right? This…thing between us? I know we just talked about it, but… ”

I straightened, caught off guard by the question. “Why do you ask?”

“I mean…” Landon shrugged. “I’m cool with it either way. Like I said, I’m still finding my footing, and…” He gestured dismissively. “But you’re sticking your neck out with your family because you don’t want me to be alone on Thanksgiving. That doesn’t seem…”

I swallowed. He made a valid point, and I didn’t have answer for him, so I said with total honesty, “I don’t know. This is… Everything about this feels like new territory to me. I don’t know what we’re doing anymore.”

The mix of emotions in his expression was impossible to read. Apprehension, definitely, but over what? That I would redefine this as something more than casual fuck buddies? Or that I wouldn’t? I had no idea what he was hoping I’d say or what he was afraid I’d say.

“I don’t know,” I repeated. “The only thing I know for sure is that I don’t want to stop.”

“I don’t want to stop either,” he whispered.
