“I heard shots,” Nancy said when Emma rushed into the house with Spur barking at her heels. “What’s going on?”

Emma grabbed at a nearby bar stool to steady herself. Out of breath, she said, “Ryder got a call. Prowlers in the woods.”

Nancy took one look at her and put an arm around her waist. “Let’s get you to the den. You need to lie down.”

“I’m okay,” Emma said, her hand on her head, the dizziness not as strong now. “Lock up and set the alarm. And call the hands that are still here and warn them, too.”

Stephanie went into motion, scurrying around the house to do as Emma had asked. By the time she’d returned, carrying a rifle and a pistol, Nancy had Emma on the couch with a cold towel over her forehead.

“All clear so far,” Stephanie said. “Our men are checking the perimeters of the yard.”

“Good,” Nancy replied. “Emma, are you still dizzy? Does your head hurt?”

“I’m okay but I’ll be better when Ryder comes through the door.”

Nancy motioned to Stephanie to sit down. “Stay nearby, honey, until we hear from your brother.”

Stephanie sank down on a chair and scrolled through her cell phone apps. But she didn’t put up a fight. Ryder had trained his family for just such a scenario.

But Emma had brought a lot of trouble into this house and once she knew he was safe, she intended to remedy that.

She didn’t have to wait too long. Thirty minutes later, he came through the door and walked into the den. “I’m all right. We got there too late, but we fired a round to scare them off. Found footprints in the woods and tire tracks up on the road.”

“Do you know who it was?” Nancy asked.

“No. Are y’all good?”

“We’re fine,” Stephanie replied, her eyes wide. “Are you hungry?”

“No.”

“Okay, then.” Nancy shook her head.

Giving them all a frustrated glance, Ryder turned and left the room.
