TWELVE

Karah Lee’s cell phone beeped just as she was making a second tour of the hotel’s breakfast bar. She had always battled a weakness for breakfast, and it didn’t help that one of her best friends in Hideaway, Bertie Meyer, owned a bed-and-breakfast with the most delicious breakfast bar in the four-state area.

Taylor’s name and number came up on the tiny cell phone screen.

“Hey, Taylor, what’s up?” she answered, eyeing a stack of waffles and bacon, alongside a vat of delicious smelling maple syrup.

“Morning.” His voice was deep and rough.

She glanced at the tall grandfather clock in the far corner of the room. “It’s nearly nine. Did you just get up?”

“I haven’t even made it to bed yet.”

“Why not?”

“I had pressing matters to attend to, such as finding someone to check out this computer for hackers.”

“And?”

“Blaze and his teacher from the college have some results of their search. It seems Jerrod was looking for more than just your personnel files.”

“He wouldn’t have found more, because the clinic didn’t have my medical files at the time.”

“But he knew where to look because he saw the information on your personnel file, and knew where you lived and worked. Or at least he could make a pretty good guess.”

“How about Dad’s records and Shona’s? Was there any evidence they were hacked into?”

“We don’t have any way of knowing. We’ve made a few calls. Their files are being checked for any evidence of tampering.”

“Will you let me know as soon as you find something?”

“Of course. Have you decided when the funeral is going to be?”

“Shona wants it done as quickly as possible, but there’s an autopsy to be performed. I think the coroner’s office will make it a top priority. If we can manage to have the service Monday, that would be best for all concerned.”

“I’ll be there,” Taylor said.

“You don’t have to do that.”

“Yes, I do. This is your father. I love you, and he would have been my father-in-law. I’m going to be there for the funeral.”

Karah Lee loved this man. “Thanks.”

“I miss you.”

She smiled. When they first met, it had not been apparent to her that Taylor Jackson was a romantic. He was big and gruff and tended to brood at times. But since they became engaged, his tender, soft side had emerged. He had become a man very much in love, and she a woman in love. She’d never thought it would happen to her.

The knowledge of his love chased away, for a few moments, the sorrow of this trip. She filled him in on the latest developments.

Too soon, however, Fawn sidled up with a pointed look at the bountiful plenty on Karah Lee’s plate. Then, Taylor received another call and had to disconnect.

Later, there would be time for a quiet talk with him. Later never came often enough.
