Chapter Eighteen

Michael

“I want to surprise him.”

Really, I just needed a little time to gather myself, especially after last night.

“I think that’s a great idea,” she agreed. “Do you need some breakfast?”

“Yeah,” I laughed at myself. “I think we drank a bit too much last night.”

Amie nodded, clamping her lips shut. “We did.”

She made me scrambled eggs and toast before we made our way down the mucky and slippery hill to check on my car. Not only were the tires thoroughly embedded and stuck in the mud, but the battery also died. Amie called a tow truck, but the wait time for someone to come up here, and the price, were both astronomical.

We went back to the house, but I was an anxious, nervous wreck. For a lot of reasons, apparently. I paced the floors, going over it in my head. Showing up here after a week of talking myself into it. Seeing her, him being gone. The pictures, the ring, the kiss. I was making myself crazy. I think I was driving Amie crazy too. She was trying to work, but I was wearing a hole in the floor the way I couldn’t sit still.

“How about a hike?” she popped out of her office with a big grin.

“Am I being that annoying?” I huffed out a laugh.

Amie just shrugged and shook her head. “I’ve been going on hikes every day.”

“Yeah,” I breathed a sigh of relief. “A hike would be amazing.”

And just like that, she made me feel better. I loved that about her.

We trudged through the muddy mess last night’s storm had made of the hillside, winding our way through the trees. For the first mile, we walked in absolute silence. I didn’t really know what to say to her, and I knew she didn’t know what to say to me. But I was happy enough just to be here listening to our feet crunch through fallen pinecones and sticks and the sound of birds chirping happily in the trees.

“So, what have you been up to for the last few months?” I asked, breaking the silence between us.

Continuing her trek up the hill, she looked over her shoulder at me, “well my photography stuff seems to have taken off. And Tony has me selling some candles and things in his boyfriend's mom's store.”

“That’s pretty cool,” my eyebrows shot up. “I didn’t know you made candles.”

“Oh,” she let out a light, tinkling laugh. “Well, I hadn’t for a long time. I needed something to do— when—when Gabe took off looking for you.”

My jaw tensed at the reminder of what a complete dick I was.

“Anyway, what have you been doing, you know, in Alaska?” She went on. “Did you make friends? What was it like there?”

She didn’t come right out and say it, but I felt like more questions lingered unsaid in the air. Had I met anyone? Had I fallen in love? Had I forgotten about her?

I watched the ground as I marched up the hillside. “Working mostly. I gutted
