On August 7, 1942, the main force approached the beaches of Guadalcanal while Munro put a section of LCPs filled with Marines onshore at Tulagi. The Guadalcanal landings went uncontested, but in days of stubborn fighting on Tulagi, 80 percent of the Marines’ first wave was wiped out. Two weeks later, Munro took his boats 20 miles across Ironbottom Sound (named for the sunken warships that littered its waters) and landed at the joint Navy–Coast Guard base on Guadalcanal’s Lunga Point.
