Chapter 23

Ensnared

Lluava’s heart beat wildly, and her inner warning reverberated. She had to get away—back to the others, back to Varren. She felt cornered, trapped. She would not let this happen.

Without glancing at the door, Lluava calculated her distance from the knob. Could she reach it with this brute in her way? Apex leaned an arm against the door for support and studied her with hazy eyes. Then, like a viper striking, he was upon her.

Before she could cry out, Apex had one hand around her throat, squeezing tightly, and his other hand grasped her waist. Her heart fluttered in her chest as a sickening feeling took over. Her growl was stifled by the iron grip of the huntsman’s hand. She lashed out, kicking and swinging, desperately hoping one of her limbs would hit its mark.

Curling his lip, Apex slammed her back against the wall, forcing out whatever air she had left in her lungs. As she struggled to catch her breath, he slid her upward, lifting her legs off the ground. Lluava had not realized how strong he was. Unable to touch the floor and becoming lightheaded, she grew rigid. She could not believe this was happening.

Lluava reached up with both hands and struggled to peel back Apex’s fingers, but her weakening grip failed her. Tightening his grip on her throat, Apex released her waist and began to untie his corded belt. Lluava clutched the arm at her throat. As the room seemed to waver and dim, she allowed herself to go limp.

Apex let his belt fall to the floor. His eyes danced. Lowering his prey, he loosened his grip just enough for his victim to gulp the humid air.

Lluava was too weak, now, to struggle or fight. But with every inhalation, her mind became a little clearer. Then, when Apex moved in, she struck. The huntsman released her and swiped at the four claw marks erupting in red across his cheek. Without a pause, Lluava kicked him in the groin, causing him to buckle and collapse on the floor. She leaped for the door, swung it open, and raced down the hall. Apex did not follow.

She sprinted toward The Tankard’s stoop. Yamir’s shouts alerted those inside, and numerous faces appeared at the doorway. Her friends surrounded her, peppering her with questions. Lluava was shaking terribly and could not seem to stop. She could not focus. Had she tried to answer them? Was she crying, too?

As the adrenaline wore off, Lluava sank to the stoop and lay motionless. Rosalyn wrapped her arm around her friend in a protective embrace. Varren and Talos strode across the street just as Apex appeared in the doorway of the Lion’s Pride. Without trying to run or fight, Apex stood there as Varren furiously shouted at him. Talos was unable to prevent Varren’s punch from slamming into Apex’s face. More shouting. Lluava’s eyes lost focus. Blinking to clear her vision, she saw Apex turn in her direction. She quickly dropped her eyes and started to shudder again.
